Two initiatives will advance education at Wellington

On July 30th two important steps were taken in relation to vocational education and future employment opportunities for people at Wellington and central western NSW. The first meeting of the Wellington Learning Community Working Party was held and later in the day a Memorandum of Understanding between TAFE and Western College was signed.

The inaugural working party is made up by representatives of each educational sector, including local schools, TAFE Western College and Charles Sturt University as well as representatives from local industry, employment services and local government.Wellington Learning Community Working Party

The following initiatives were set-out as the terms of reference for the Working Party:

  • Take responsibility for management of Wellington Learning Community.
  • Promote learning and awareness of education and training to youth and adult population in the Wellington region to ensure people have awareness of the opportunities and have confidence to pursue education and training.
  • Establish relationships with all regional industries and community organisations and work with schools, Adult Education, University and TAFE to provide education and training opportunities that match industry and community needs.
  • Establish employment pathways with appropriate support services for the youth of Wellington.

TAFE and Western College sign Memorandum of Understanding

Following the meeting the Institute Director for TAFE NSW Western Institute, Adrian Mitchell and Chief Executive Officer of Western College took the opportunity to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between their two organisations.

Adrian Mitchell said that during 2008 TAFE NSW Western Institute has worked to establish agreements with Adult Community Education providers a throughout Central and Western NSW.

Mr Mitchell said, "Every step we make to improve opportunities for people to have better employment outcomes is important. The Wellington Learning Community will become a positive force in aligning education and training with development of the Wellington district."

"With regard to our Memorandum of Understanding with the Western College, we realise there are a number of areas where the two training organisations compliment each other, and there is potential for us to work together to help match people's skills with industry needs."

The meeting was attended by Mr Warren Grimshaw AM a Member, NSW TAFE Commission Board  and Chair, ACE-TAFE Western Region Working Group which  has been instrumental in progressing closer working relationships between Adult Community Education and TAFE.
