Linton Smith

Primary Industry and Natural Resources

Linton Smith is the Most Outstanding Graduating Student for Primary Industries and Natural Resources at TAFE Western in 2009.

Linton, from Broken Hill, left school in year 11 and went to work for his father as a jackeroo. After an assortment of labouring jobs he eventually became an underground contractor in the mining industry.

Linton started training with TAFE as part of his work with Bemax Mineral Sands in Broken Hill. He completed the Certificate II in Extractive Industries in 2007 and the Certificate III in Metalliferous Mining Processing last year.

He says that without his TAFE training he would not have progressed above mine labourer. "TAFE has helped me to establish a career path and is very supportive in helping me reach every milestone."

As he aspires to be a mine manager Linton is currently undertaking the Diploma in Metalliferous Mining to help him meet the requirements of the Mine Managers Examiners Board.
