Frequently asked questions about scholarships

Who can apply for scholarships?

 All scholarships have particular eligibility criteria, so it is a good idea to read these criteria carefully before applying. Providing you fulfil the eligibility criteria for a particular scholarship, you are welcome to apply.

 Can I apply for a scholarship if I am an international student?

No. The scholarships currently available are open to Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents only. However we are committed to maximising scholarship opportunities for students and hope to expand our scholarship program in the future.

Can I apply for more than one scholarship?

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for as many different scholarships as you like. However, you can only receive one scholarship from Western Institute at any one time.

 How are scholarship recipients selected?

 The scholarship panel will assess the information provided in your application form and will shortlist the appropriate candidate. These candidates may then be invited to attend an interview.

 How can I maximise my chances of getting a scholarship?

 Read the terms and conditions of the scholarship/s you are interested in very carefully.

Complete all relevant sections and submit all correct supporting documentation as detailed in the application form. It is necessary to provide the documents requested to verify that you are eligible and to assist in ranking your application relative to other applications. Information which cannot be immediately verified may not be assessed.

All information supplied in your application is treated confidentially.

Do not attach original documents to your application as these will not be returned to you.

All photocopied documents must be certified by a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner of Declarations.

Without the required supporting documentation your application cannot be assessed.

 When will I be notified of the outcome of my application?

 You will receive notification of the outcome of your application s soo as procaticable for 2011 Semester I.

 What happens if I am awarded a scholarship?

 You will receive a notification that you have been awarded the scholarship and a scholarship recipient agreement that outlines the terms and conditions of accepting the scholarship. You will need to sign and submit this agreement and provide your bank account details for periodic transfers of the scholarship amount.

You will also be invited to events which relate to the scholarship program. Your name, profile and photograph may be used in promotional materials for TAFE Western.

 What is the value of each scholarship?

Each scholarship is valued at $2000 and will be transferred to your nominated bank account in instalments as agreed.

 What is deemed to be an appropriate academic record for scholarship purposes?

 An appropriate academic record is deemed as achieving successful completion of a course.

Can I defer a scholarship offer?

 No. Deferring the scholarship offer will make the scholarship void. If you do want to defer, you are more than welcome to make a scholarship application by

the next relevant deadline.

 When and how do I receive payment for my scholarship?

You will be notified of the outcome of your application/s by mail. When you receive the letter acknowledging your success, you will also receive a scholarship recipient agreement.

Your bank account details need to be provided along with the signed scholarship recipient agreement. Your scholarship money will be transferred periodically to your nominated bank account.

Do I need to pay tax?

All scholarship payments made to students studying on a full-time basis, are tax exempt. If you are studying part time, you may be liable to pay tax on your scholarship. However Western Institute encourages each scholarship recipient to seek their own advice.

 How can I spend the scholarship money?

Within your application form, you will have to provide a statement detailing how you will spend the scholarship amount. The amount will cover course fees and other course related expenses.

 What will happen if I change my enrolment details during the scholarship period?

Will receiving a scholarship affect my Centrelink benefits, taxable income for the year?

 Students will need to contact the relevant government department in regards to their own personal circumstances. In some cases, students who receive a certain kind of Commonwealth benefit or allowance may be eligible for a concession at Western Institute.
