Environmental Management Systems
The Environmental Management System (EMS) course is a newly developed training option here at TAFE Western. It was run as a pilot project during 2010 and was highly successful. It will be offered as a Statement of Attainment in 2011. The course is a part of the Conservation Land Management training package.
A genuine need has arisen for specific training for landholders to develop suitable long-term, sustainable solutions to manage the environmental impacts on farms and properties. An EMS provides landholders with a framework to manage the impacts of their activities on the environment. It enables them to monitor environmental performance, in a similar way to how a financial management system would monitor expenditure and income. A successful EMS integrates environmental management into a the organisation's daily operations, long term planning and other quality management systems.
An EMS can assist learners in the following ways:
- Demonstrate more efficient ways of using resources and help improve overall environmental performance through more efficient operations
- Help reduce waste on the property
- Build awareness of environmental concern among the community and employees
- Provide greater understanding of the environmental impacts of business activities
ISO 14001 is the standard for Environment Management Systems. The TAFE Western EMS course has been designed with the ISO 14001 in mind, to help you to develop your own EMS to this standard. These standards are developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and is a collection of voluntary standards that assist organisations to achieve environmental and financial success through the implementation of effective environmental management.
