Employer training obligations
As an employer of a trainee you must provide your trainee with:
- every opportunity to learn the skills and acquire the knowledge of the traineeship
- access to structured on and/or off-the-job training
- time off work to attend training when necessary
- time at work to undertake structured training
- a safe working environment
- a work environment free from any form of harassment
- other benefits specified in the training agreement or industrial arrangement (eg. a tool allowance).
You are responsible for ensuring that the trainee has access to the full range of work required to develop the skills and industry knowledge they need on the job.
You also need to observe their progress and confirm that they are developing the required skills and knowledge. To ensure this, there are various records which must be maintained by either the employer or the trainee.
Depending on the nature of the traineeship, these records include:
- a competency record book
- an attendance card which your Registered Training Organisation (RTO) may provide to confirm regular attendance at off-the-job training.
Training Plans
Each trainee receives an individualised Training Plan which is negotiated with TAFE. The plan will describe the way the training will be delivered to the trainee for the qualification identified on their training contract. The plan is developed by TAFE based on the trainee's needs, abilities and circumstances, in consultation with the trainee and the employer.
Each training plan defines the core and elective modules (subjects) and relevant competencies (skills) for the traineeship. Your trainee coordinator will explain this to you when they help you and your trainee select suitable modules.
Can changes be made to training plans?
Changes may be made to training plans if it is agreed to by all parties. Contact your Trainee Coordinator for more information on this.

- the full range of facilities required to develop competencies in all aspects of their training plan
